REBELION contributes to Circular Battery Cluster’s position paper

REBELION joins BatteReverse, REINFORCE and RECIRCULATE in a new position paper setting out recommendations to close regulatory and standardisation gaps for a circular battery value chain in Europe.

REBELION has contributed to a new joint position paper, “Enabling Europe’s Circular Battery Value Chain,” published by the Circular Battery Cluster together with fellow Horizon Europe projects BatteReverse, REINFORCE and RECIRCULATE.

Drawing on shared experience across reverse logistics, diagnostics, automation and recycling, the paper flags remaining implementation and standardisation gaps in the EU battery regulatory framework and sets out recommendations for policymakers and industry to support a competitive, circular battery value chain by 2035.

REBELION’s contribution reflects its own focus within the Cluster: developing a highly automated and safe streamlined process for lithium-ion battery repurposing and recycling.

On 18th March, Global Recycling Day, the REBELION project highlights the essential role of lithium-ion battery (LIB) reuse and recycling in supporting a circular economy for electric mobility.

While the adoption of electric vehicles continues to accelerate, managing the end-of-life of batteries is becoming a critical challenge. Many LIBs that are no longer suitable for vehicle use still retain significant capacity and can be safely repurposed for second-life applications, extending their service for up to a decade.

REBELION focuses on advanced battery performance assessment, automated inspection, and robotics-driven disassembly solutions. These technologies enable accurate prediction of battery longevity, identification of reusable components, and optimisation of recycling processes. By combining automation and data-driven approaches, the project is helping create safer, faster, and more scalable circular pathways for lithium-ion batteries.

Participating in Global Recycling Day, REBELION emphasizes the importance of sustainable resource management, industrial innovation, and cross-sector collaboration. The project demonstrates how research, technology development, and coordinated efforts across academia and industry can contribute to efficient circular battery systems, reducing waste, recovering valuable materials, and supporting resilient supply chains.

The REBELION General Assembly took place on 30 September – 1 October 2025 at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). The meeting gathered all partners to review progress, exchange knowledge, and align on the next stages of the project.

On Day 1, the consortium presented the main results achieved from Month 24 to Month 29 (M24–M29). These included technical developments to improve safe and sustainable lithium-ion battery repurposing and recycling. Later, the partners visited the UPV pilot line, which demonstrated how the project is moving from research to application. This visit helped partners better understand the advancements achieved and their contribution to the European battery value chain.

On Day 2, discussions focused on the next steps planned from M29 to M32. Each partner shared priorities and agreed on concrete actions to ensure smooth implementation. To close the meeting, participants visited the CMT facility, where researchers explained their work on testing, validation, and sustainable mobility applications. The tour highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between research and industry to reach the project’s goals.

The REBELION General Assembly not only reinforced the commitment of the consortium but also strengthened collaboration across partners. The meeting confirmed progress towards the project’s ambition: developing a highly automated, safe, and efficient process for repurposing and recycling lithium-ion batteries. With this approach, REBELION supports Europe’s transition to a circular economy and contributes to the European Green Deal objectives.
