Fully charged for the finish line: REBELION's final newsletter

Dear REBELION community,

Since June 2023, REBELION has worked on one question: how can used lithium-ion batteries from electric mobility be taken apart, tested and given a second life safely and at scale? As the project comes to an end on 30 November, this last edition brings together what we have learned and where you can find it.

In the coming weeks you can meet us twice: in Stockholm at Battery Innovation Days, and in Lyon at Batteries Event 2026, where we hold our final event. You will also find our five technology briefs, a new policy brief on the EU Battery Passport and a short video on what a second-life battery can become.

Meet us in Lyon: REBELION final event

16–18 November 2026 · Batteries Event 2026, Lyon Convention Center (France) REBELION closes at Batteries Event 2026, with a booth open for all three days. It is the best place to see the project's results and talk to the people who developed them. At the booth you can learn how REBELION tests a used battery's condition in minutes, dismantles packs and modules with robotic support, moves damaged batteries safely and tracks each battery's history with a digital passport.

Battery Innovation Days in Stockholm

11–12 November 2026 · Stockholm · Circular Battery Cluster booth A few days before our final event, REBELION partners will be at Battery Innovation Days 2026, organised by the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA) with Battery 2030+ and the IPCEIs. We will share the Circular Battery Cluster booth with our sister projects funded by Horizon Europe, all working on what happens when a battery reaches the end of its first life. On 11 November at 11:30, the cluster takes part in the session "Which Place for Mining, Refining, and Recycling in the Circle Life of Batteries?".

Five REBELION solutions, one brief each

New policy brief: what happens to the Battery Passport when a battery is taken apart?

From February 2027, electric vehicle, light means of transport and industrial batteries placed on the EU market will need a digital Battery Passport. But the passport follows the battery as it was sold, usually the whole pack. Once that pack is dismantled into modules and cells for reuse or recycling, the information risks being lost. Our new policy brief, Closing the Cell-Level Gap: Why the EU Battery Passport Needs to Reach Disassembled Modules and Cells, draws on REBELION's pilot lines to show what this gap means in practice. It ends with three recommendations for EU policymakers and standardisation bodies.

From a used battery to a table lamp

When a battery can no longer power a ride, its story does not have to end. Our partner ONA has turned a used battery into the heart of Lucy, a table lamp: a simple example of reuse, less waste and more thoughtful design.

Rebelion
